Which country has the coolest national anthem?

Though I’m not from Wales, the Welsh national anthem “Land of our fathers” sounds pretty impressive. It resonates well around sports stadiums. It’s normally sung in the Welsh language.

But since you asked for a cool anthem, this version sung by Nolwenn Leroy in Breton, the traditional language of Brittany, fits the bill even better. It’s the same tune, and the words are apparently pretty similar in meaning. The location is the Stade de France in Paris.

Since France has a different approach to its constituent regions than the UK, there isn’t officially a Breton national anthem. But if there was it would probably be the above, Bro Gozh ma Zadoù.

What does it mean? According to BBC Wales - Music - National Anthem the Welsh version Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau means roughly this in English:

Land Of My Fathers

This land of my fathers is dear to me
Land of poets and singers, and people of worth
Her brave warriors, fine patriots
Shed their blood for freedom

Chorus:
Land! Land! I am true to my land!
As long as the sea serves as a wall for this pure, dear land
May the language endure for ever.

Old land of the mountains, paradise of the poets,
Every valley, every cliff a beauty guards;
Through love of my country, enchanting voices will be
Her streams and rivers to me.

Chorus:
Land! Land! I am true to my land!
As long as the sea serves as a wall for this pure, dear land
May the language endure for ever.

Though the enemy have trampled my country underfoot,
The old language of the Welsh knows no retreat,
The spirit is not hindered by the treacherous hand
Nor silenced the sweet harp of my land.

Chorus:
Land! Land! I am true to my land!
As long as the sea serves as a wall for this pure, dear land
May the language endure for ever.
