Keshinro Ololade popularly known by his stage name "Lil Kesh" is a Nigerian singer, rapper, and songwriter. As some of us knew how he rose to fame after his chart-topping song titled 'Shoki' which was released in 2014. His music career really transcend during that year as he was nominated in the best new act to watch category at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards (NEA) and also got nominated at the most prestigious award in the country 'HEADIES' for the Next Rated Award.
After four (4) years down the line Lil Kesh's career momentum as taking a downtime turn, as he seems not to be relevant in the industry any longer. Lil Kesh's versatility and style of music has similarity to that of 'Olamide' whom raps & sings in local dialect. However, he has been criticized for using too much vulgar sentences & not finding the right balance in the lyrics of his songs.
We could have seen him do much better in the industry as a lot of controversy surrounded him during the 2015 Headies Award event, which we saw Lil Kesh's then record label owner 'Olamide' blasting the organizers of the award right on stage during the ceremony for not giving the Next Rated Award to Lil Kesh, whom he said was supposed to be the winner ahead of 'Reekado Banks'.
Now, putting the puzzle together. I could understand why a lot of people didn't vote him to emerge emerge as the winner as he has shown not to be able to stand the test of time in the industry. To my best knowledge, 2015 was the only & last time he was nominated for any notable music award in the country.
For a 2015 Next Rated Award Nominee, I must say; what a downtime for Lil Kesh's music career! His contemporaries during the 2015 Headies Award "Reekado banks & Kiss Daniel" have grown into more limelight with their songs having top charts over the years respectively & consecutively.
As a music artist, you'll have to deal with personal disappointments while as well as issues with the music industry.
Here are the probably challenges why "Lil Kesh" is having a downtime;
1. Creating Music Audience Will Love
To truly have a lucrative career, Lil Kesh must must create music his audience wants to hear. "Gone are the days your audience will remain a fan if you don't release good songs". It's vital to channel the passion to find the right sound, genre, topics, image and target audience for the music.
2. Relating His New Brand To His Audience
Despite the fact that he has left his former record label 'YBNL' & created his own label; 'YAGI'.
Lil Kesh has failed to portray himself as an authority figure in the industry by leading the curve. My question is; what happened to the relationship he has with the 'YBNL' team and the producers that gave him hit songs during the early stage of his career? The likes of "Young John & Pheelz"
There is always a curve in each genre of music and he needs to be more careful jumping on an existing bandwagon that is phasing out. He should take the chance of not falling falling behind the curve, as othe bands are more cutting edge shape in the industry.
The music industry is a tough one to get into, but even more difficult to stay in. Lil Kesh need to mingle with the right people & be proactive in every step of the way to keep his career afloat or he will drown in no time & be forgotten.
