Throwback! 10 Nigerian Dance Styles That Were Once A Vibe

These 10 Nigerian dance styles used to be the ultimate moves at any party. Well, you can still burst these moves today but the shaku shaku trend just won’t up.

We’re feeling a bit nostalgic today and thought we would come up with a list of dance styles we enjoyed whilst growing up. From Olu Maintain’s ‘Yahooze’ to Daddy Showkey’s ‘Galala’, these dance moves were once a vibe and rocked everywhere in Nigeria.

1. Galala

Thanks to artistes like Blacky, Daddy Showkey and Ras Kimono, Galala was a vibe. The dance originated from the reggae sound in Ajegunle.

2. Suo

Suo was an offspring of the popular galala dance it also originated in Ajegunle’s ghetto and was propagated by suo master of his time Marvellous Benjy. Mad Melon and Mountain Black, known as the Danfo Drivers, also sang about it and used the dance moves in all their videos.

3. Makossa

Let’s not forget the most popular dance move of our time, ‘Makossa’. In many ways, the dance trend rode on the spread of a very rhythmic Congolese sound. Makossa means “dance” in Douala. It was indeed a wave.

4. Yahooze

This dance trend started when Kennis Music star, Olu Maintain, decided to release his single ‘Yahooze’ in 2008. Even the US Secretary of State at the time, Colin Powell had to do the dance when he came to Abuja.

5. Azonto

Another mad jam and style! This one came all the way from Ghana to us as a gift. Wizkid and Fuse ODG’s hit songs ‘Azonto’ took it to the Uk.

6. Alanta

This dance move threw the nation into a state of commotion. The dance involved a crazy movement of the arms and legs with shocking facial expressions to follow.

7. Etighi

We have Iyanya to thank for this one. Etighi is a traditional dance from the South-South of Nigeria. It gained popularity when Iyanya sang about it and used the dance as the main element of the video for his massive hit ‘Kukere’.

8. Skelewu

This dance style was introduced by Davido through his song ‘Skelewu’. The dance not only scored big here, it also became very popular in the UK.

9. Shoki

Shoki, is arguably the biggest dance trend of the last 10 years. This dance had Olamide, Davido and Lil Kesh sing and vibe to it.

10. Shakiti Bobo

We have Olamide to blame for this one. In 2015, Olamide released a song called ‘Bobo’ and soon the dance style caught on and everyone was “boboing”.

Before you go, here are some old Nigerianmovies to binge on this week.
